Why Breakdancing is Good For You

Breakdancing offers many benefits beyond impressing people with your moves. It is a form of expression, a dialogue between two people or groups, and a way to bond with others sharing the same passion to “talk” with their limbs and other body parts.

Surprisingly, many breakdancers also testify to how relaxed they feel during and after dancing. It gives a sort of catharsis to them, especially when they feel they need to release a lot of pent-up energy. In a lot of instances, B-boys and girls dance their aggression away, and the result is often entertaining.

Breakdancing is also a very social thing. Hardly anyone break dances alone. In this regard, many groups and affiliations are formed, borne out of a shared love for the movement. Even very young kids bond together because of this dance, and they typically get trained by older kids. There is a sharing of experience and advice by demonstration, which no lecture or formal schooling can hope to achieve.

Also, many break dancers are undeniably fit. Though some may be prone to accidents (you do have plenty of contact with the floor, and that opens up a lot of possibilities for bumps, bruises, and broken body parts), the kind of movement involved in breakdance require a fitness and flexibility that will take some time to have. People who are into breakdancing have to watch their weight and the food they eat.

Fitness studies show how breakdancers who have been at it for a long time have very strong upper bodies. In fact, some breakdancing moves have now been integrated into gym programs like aerobics and other cardio-related routines. The combination of strength, balance, and flexibility is an alluring one for any gym enthusiast: it only makes sense because breakdance offers all of these minus the expensive gym fees and equipment.

As demonstrated in the previous post, even kids can reap the benefits of breakdancing at a tender age. Beyond harnessing their potential agility and grace, kids can bond over breakdancing in the same way they bond over games, books, toys, and other mutual interests. Their boundless energy can be translated into an expression that will allow them to go beyond words. Dancing does that to older people…what more to impressionable children with a lot of energy to spare?

Breakdancing For Kids? Why Not?

Kids go through many so-called rites of passage in the pursuit of healthy activities where they could focus their pent-up energy on. There’s learning how to bike, swim, skip rope, climb a tree, skate, build something with their hands…

…but breakdancing?

Understandably, many parents might not look too kindly on an activity where the word “break” is involved. However, as this clip from the Ellen show reveals, even tiny kids can breakdance like a pro.

The adorable interview showed how confident this small child was, and how he only copied what he saw on breakdancing films without the need for a professional dance instructor. A photo segment in the video even showed him b-boying it with his two-year old baby brother!

Many children now express an interest in breakdancing because it allows them to make moves that are a lot like playing around, and they can become more flexible and dexterous in the process. With the proper guidance, any child can be able to breakdance as long as care and caution are involved in the process.

When asked what his favorite breakdance move was, the cute child replied (much to the delight and amusement of the audience):

“Head spinning because I get dizzy and then I fall down”.

And when he started dancing, the audience just went wild.

The child had rhythm, and whether it was borne out of long periods practicing on his own or he picked it up from the moves of those older than him, one thing was for sure: this was a very confident, happy child.

Do You Love Breakdancing?

Breakdancing in the Mainstream

Many teenagers today loves express themselves by showing off their talents by singing, breakdancing and many more.

Some are even joining the TV shows called “So You Think You Can Dance”, to show the world what they can do. Breakdancing is one of the most interesting talents that I love the most. The movie Step Up 1, 2 and 3 makes me want to dance while watching it.

The Origin of Breakdancing:

“Breakdance, the oldest known hip-hop style of dance, is believed to have originated in the Bronx, New York in the 1970′s. Sonic inspirations date back to the energetic performances of funk maestro, James Brown. In the early days of djing, emceeing, and b-boying, a break – instrumental part of a song that is looped repeatedly by the DJ – were incorporated into songs to allow a showcase of improvised breakdance steps.”

Kids below 10 years of age even know how to breakdance and create his or her own moves. Even a 50 year old man would be trying to do his own moves if he sees someone breakdancing around the corner.
